Deathverse: Let It Die is a bit janky, and very much a love it or hate it ordeal

Deathverse: Let it Die is a brand of bizarre that has been sorely lacking from the battle royale genre, let’s start with that. It’s clunky, ultra-violent, flashy, and unconventional. It’s a game that many will find – and likely have found already – visually unappealing. But for me it’s a delicacy to gorge on — oozing a distinct character. I, in spite of its obvious flaws, like Deathverse: Let it Die. I like it a lot.

The combat itself has certainly taken a few cues from the Souls franchise – all shoulder buttons to attack and what-have-you – which is easily forgotten as a relatively recent design choice. It does differ in a few key ways, though; there’s no locking on or parrying, and playing offensively almost all the time is actively encouraged here. Since your attacks generate GP and heal you, the result is an interesting tug-of-war dynamic. This means it’s never too late to win and that landing a few choice blows, even when you’re on your last legs, can quickly turn a fight around in your favor.

Each map is divided into multiple open arenas, and each of them is connected with others through short passageways and doors. As the match goes on and players start to fall, select areas start to get contaminated – which forces the remaining players to move towards the safe areas. Deathverse: Let It Die also adds a hunter player to the mix, which is an unkillable character that ruthlessly hunts the players on the field – which of course, requires you to stay out of its line of sight. You are free to use all sorts of tricks and strategies on the battlefield, ranging from hiding in bushes to all-out-frontal assault or intercepting two fighting players to anything that your mind conjures up.

Away from the action, there’s fairly decent character customisation which allows you to personalise your avatar as you’d expect. This is mostly done through your clothing — which can be changed to a vast wardrobe of industrial, post apocalyptic, or high fashion attire. If you like the general aesthetic of Deathverse, you’ll find some drip to your tastes here sooner or later. But if you’re looking for some traditional, run-of-the-mill sim gear you’ll likely walk away disappointed. It’s just not that kind of game — everything is tied to the particular, horrible world you find yourself in.

There is a slight PvE element to the Death Jamboree, too, as small monsters known as cryptids roam the stage – easy pickings for some bonus GP and some crafting materials. The other AI enemy, the hunter, is a much more frightening affair, however. They are summoned by the hosts with the express purpose of ruining your day, and if you don’t turn tail and run at the first sight of them, they will succeed. The hunter is immortal and will tear a contestant to shreds with just a few attacks, though mercifully, they will retreat after a moment or two.

Deathverse: Let It Die’s visual presentation isn’t anything to gawk at, but it’s nothing bad either. The game has a very bright color palette and abundant use of gold, and the character design also looks pretty unique, to say the least. The levels also use popping colours like red and maroon abundantly, and they look fairly good. Deathverse: Let It Die is a pretty technically sound game as well, and I didn’t notice any significant bugs or glitches during my time with the game. That said, I did experience a recurring connectivity issue whenever I logged in – which required me to reconnect at least two or three times before the game finally logged me on its server.

All in all the game is a blast. It is a bit janky, and very much a love it or hate it ordeal. Some of you will bounce off it in a few games, and some of you will get a giggle out of how explosively violent it can be. Fans of Let it Die bizzarely are in the same boat, and their love will depend greatly on their infactuation with the general gameplay experience. It strikes me as a game made by people who wanted to create something distinct for the sake of variety in a popular genre saturated with familiar traits. People who are probably fun to drink with. Not much about Deathverse: Let it Die is familiar, and it’s free. So like, try it out!
